What Your Shoot Day Checklist is Missing
I know what you’re thinking: “I’ve spent weeks, months, heck, sometimes even years planning this photoshoot! There is NO WAY I’m missing something!!” BUT there is one vital item that we photographers often overlook until the last possible second.
Did you remember to ask yourself what you’re going to eat?
This might not be the vital piece of equipment that you were expecting, but I promise, it’s literally one of the most important parts of your day. When you’re shooting, there’s a chance that you aren’t going to have a second to stop and grab lunch, or a snack, or even something cold to drink throughout the day. Then what? Do you create subpar work because you're dizzy from hunger and exhaustion, or bloated and gassy from the fast food burger you quickly shoved in your mouth between shots? That. Sounds. Terrible.
That’s why this missing piece has become an essential part of my shoot day plan. It’s simple really! Eating healthy throughout the day helps me think more clearly, and be more present and alert. Also, full disclosure, I get hangry really easily. Like hulk style mad if my belly is on empty. So planning snacks in advance helps me communicate better with everyone involved in the shoot. In short: Happy photographer = happy clients!
Not sure what to pack or looking for some fun ideas? Here are some of my favorite go-to snacks that I often bring to shoots that are gluten free, dairy free, and (mostly) sugar free!
Barnana Plantain Chips: To say I’m obsessed is an understatement. They’re salty, naturally sweet, and crunchy. All good things!
Fresh fruits and veggies: My favorites are always berries because I have a sweet tooth and they help satisfy that craving without adding a ton of sugar to my diet.
Bitchin Sauce: This almond based, hummus-like dip is AMAZING! There’s a ton of delicious flavors. It’s perfect for dipping veggies, chips, rice crackers, and cut-up meats.
Nuts: I’ve been on a huge pistachio kick lately. The salt and pepper ones from Costco are definitely my favorite.
Leftover Meat: I’ll often cook extra chicken breasts for dinner the night before the shoot so I can cut up the leftovers and bring them along to dip in my Bitchin Sauce.
Sandwich meat: If I don’t have leftover meat to bring, I’ll make sure to at least pack some sandwich meat so I can add some sustainable protein into my day.
Beef Jerky: This is another easy to pack protein option. Make sure to check the packaging though because some brands add extra sugar.
Popcorn: Popcornopolis has their Nearly Naked popcorn that’s just coconut oil and salt… and is super delicious.
Heavenly Hunks: Because… again, I have a sweet tooth and having a little treat mixed into my day makes me super happy. It’s a great midday pick me up because it gives me something to look forward to.
Giant Jug of Water: Don’t forget the water!! BUT, I’ll also often pack a S.Pellegrino in my lunch box because it’s fun to have a little variety thrown in there.
And when the shoot is done, I’m always excited to celebrate with a bite to eat at a nearby restaurant when I can finally sit down and enjoy good food, fun company, and lively conversations!
Remember that while you’re packing up your camera bag, don’t forget to pack snacks too!! I promise, you’ll thank me later!
